A proud man is always looking
down on things and people; and,
of course, as long as you
are looking down, you cannot
see something that is above you.

C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

HER ROYAL PEACOCK MAJESTY

A Pecock is a majestic bird, a breed of royalty in it's comportment or bearing. Its tail sings its praise without any audible sound, in displays of brilliant, prismatic, lustrous,  rainbow-like colors which pronounce her the undisputable Beauty-King of all birds.

There is a human Peacock. It is personified as a mentality which resides in man and its common name is Negative Pride. Have you met him or her before ?

(NEGATIVE) PRIDE GOES BEFORE A FALL

Once upon a time, in a far far away kingdom, there ruled a king who had an only daughter named Ireti (which in Yoruba means "Expectation"), whom he loved dearly.

Therein also lived a farmer, who was a peacock to the core: arrogant, excessively vain and constantly exhibiting pride that rings  ear - splitting bells.

Expectedly he was not a popular man but was rather notorious because of his nature and bearing.

He refused to associate with anybody, he was aloof, full of lofty airs, as proud as a peacock, and held the villagers in high contempt.

Well, one day, this vain farmer was on his way to the village market, when he met a girl in the company of two others.

He did not know she was the princess, since he had never met her before.

A reasonable fellow would have taken note of her appearance, the royal air hanging about her, and the bearing of servitude which was very noticable in her companions.

Not only did he fail to observe all these, while passing he pompously brushed past her, unfortunately hitting her shoulder and causing her to stagger.

Ireti's maids protested and he shouted on them:

"Don't you dare say another word, else I'll show you who I am! Next time you show respect to your superior, okay?"

Had he not been so full of himself, he could have noticed the alarmed looks on the faces of villagers who had witnessed the scene.

But he did not.

When the furious king later issued a decree demanding for his head,  nobody cared to give him warning.

Thus was it that he allowed his pride and vanity to see the end of him.....
